Many times groups of players join the game or join together with the ambition of building a town or settlement, I am going to offer some basic advice on what skills will be required, and the easiest way to go about your project. Firstly this is not an easy task and will take time, lots of time. The more players co-operating the easier the task will be both in terms of time and in regards to each players skill alloctaions.

While it is not essential to have boats it is very useful and I would always recommend at least one person has a boat if not two. There are a couple of reasons for this, one is transportation of materials to your towns location and secondly you get a practice run at laying a deed before investing too heavily in a bastion or keep deed which requires much more training and financial investment. With this being said you will need the following skills:

Mining : for gathering ore for nails
Herbalism : for gathering flax to make linen
Lumberjacking : to gather wood for planks

Carpentry : for making planks out of your wood for boats and for buildings later
Toolsmith : for making and repairing all of your tools as well as the nails, basic tools will drastically slow your progress
Tailor : for making linen out of all the flax
Shipwright : for creating the boat deeds, you can make basic boats from skill 0 although you will have lots of failed attempts

The first thing to do is craft you first boat deed so you know the materials you need to gather for making it. This will cost you a few gold for ink and paper. Once you have the deed it should list the materials required, I wont go into detail as these are subject to change. A group of players working together should be able to make a basic boat in a relatively short space of time, the issue that will cause most problems at this stage is going to be who owns it. Currently the person who places the deed will be the owner so perhaps the faction leader may assume control. This is key, DONT PLACE THE DEED UNTIL YOU HAVE ALL THE MATERIALS. All building and boat deeds start to decay if they dont have materials to start building, or if you place a portion of the materials and they run out then the items already built decay over time. The last thing you want to do is waste efforts by letting them decay during the building process.

Once you have all your materials saved up and crafted into planks and nails and linen you can then think about placing your boat deed. You will want to take some materials with you straight away to start the building process immediately, and its unlikely you have the capacity to carry everything. Take you boat deed to the coast and move a little way into the sea, then right click your deed to use it. Once you have clicked you should get a transparrent image of your boat on your curser. Before clicking again to place it have a play around with manipulating. You can move it around a small area with your mouse or rotate its direction using your mouse wheel. This will be much more important when placing objects and buildings in your town. Once you have familiarised youself with the deed placement simly click again to place the boat deed. It is worth mentioning that you do need to consider the depth of water too, hence why I suggested moving a little way into the ocean.

You should now have a solid boat floating in the ocean with a simple raft/scaffold surrounding it. This is an empty shell right now and you need to add you materials to start the building process. Right clicking should bring up the build window and a list of the materials to be added. Simply clicking the star icon will move any materials from your bags into the build queue. The creation of your boat will take a good few hours so plenty of time to make sure evrything is there, as long as you previously had it gathered.

Once all the materials have been added its just a case of waiting for it to complete. You dont have to stay local or even stay online, it will finish all by itself. Once complete you can go for your maiden voyage to search for you building location.

Now you have a boat and a way to transport your materials around more easily you can consider expanding with more boats or starting the foundations of your town. Most of the skills that have been trained while making that first boat are also useful for constructing your town, however you will require a few more, mainly architecture, pottery and masonry.

Architecture : allows the creation of deeds for residential manufacturing and millitary buildings.
Masonry : allows the construction of bricks, foundations and workspaces.
Pottery : allows for the manufacture of bricks mortar and workspaces.

The list of skill requirements is constantly expanding and by this stage you would hopefully have a firm base of regular players to help with the distribution of skills and the collection and manufacturing process. It can be done using alt characters but nothing is better than having friends to chat to while mining on the top of a mountain.

The first thing I will talk about is housing, as these are tha basic architecture deeds that will be made while training to make control buildings such as bastions or a keep. Residential buildings do not require the land to be claimed first so faction members can build their own houses while working towards a bastion, or the deeds can be saved until later when the land is claimed and players want to settle. Its just a case of priorities for your faction and how you decide to do things. Just like boats the deeds are made with paper and ink, and the material costs are on the deeds themselves. Should you place housing you need to consider you wont have the ability to work locally until a bastion and the forge or spindle etc are placed so you may prefer to leave this until later. All workspace items require land to be claimed, as I have not been able to place any inside a residential building succesfuly up to now. Hopefully you have 10 or so players and you can all have a nice basic house deed to help the training to get to the level of making your first bastion deed.

You will create you bastion deed, and set about gathering and crafting all the materials. This is not a simple or quick task, and you must remember the investment will be worth it in the end. Once you own a patch of land you can access more interesting building options such as warehousing, farms and workspaces. On top of that player housing and decorative items to make your town feel like home. While in beta I am not going to recommend any of this, it is your choice and THERE MAY BE FURTHER SERVER WIPES LATER THAT WILL UNDO ALL OF YOUR EFFORTS, I am just simply offering a scenario for people to follow if they choose.

Once you have gathered up all your materials and loaded them onto your boats you can set sail for your desired location. This is the reason I recommend boats first as you can travel quickly and easily in just one trip, hopefully, to your point of building. It may be a long way from your bank on south vynn so fewer trips is better to avoid decay, or in a live scenario the chances of being attacked by other players.

It is worth taking with you a deed for a spindle, a forge, a kiln, an anvil and a crate deed for any player wanting to live locally immediately. This will allow you the workspaces required for expansion and some storage for further building until you have the shared space of a warehouse.

Placing the bastion deed is no different to placing a boat deed except you should get a control area highlighted when you have the transparent model in view. Once placed in the desired spot its a case of adding the materials and waiting. Once the bastion has completed buildign you should be able to place and use your workspaces and continue expanding your town in any way you choose.

Thats the basics of getting started, I am sure some of it will become outdated in time so please ask questions if you aren’t sure about anything. I will happily answer PM’s or reply.

At this stage adding that sort of detail is really not worth posting, constant changes force updates to these guides which can be time consuming at best.

Sounds very interesting GMPathy! I have not played this game yet, but I like to hear that there’re lots of things to do and see. Building a settlements gives me the impression that it’s interesting. I hope that’s true in the game as well as it’s in my mind!
