Dawntide has alot of ambition as far as roleplaying, politics, player settlements, pvp, and economics are concerned. but will dawntide have the desired playerbase?i know many games have failed cause of this.plus the devs dont really have the resources to advertise. now,i found this game after the servers went down.when they where up,was there a strong enough playerbase for all the things ive listed to work properly?

Dawntide will do well if it has a good tutorial system, if not, it fails because most of the players that stick around have been trained by game Vets such as tinker, pathy, divayith, caper, boggs, and I, among other members of factions with vets in them.

+100 to what LordWiese said about Tutorial System.

I quit Darkfall & Mortal Online because of hopeless / can’t understand tutorial.
The only tutorial i seem to understand is Wurm Online. but i still need some help from the players inside.

ive heard this countless times^.its so true. sandbox games still need to get the player started.because without some type of tutorial system, the game just looks like a big empty mess to a new player.

Once this game goes live, and the cash begins to roll in, I think there’ll be more oppertunities for advertisement. You may have noticed that there’s a lot of people looking for “something else” than the rather regular leveling MMOs. I think this game will attract those people. And I’m personally not interested in roleplaying/playing with anyone not finding this MMO interesting. I also hope that the fee will keep other “certain players” away.

No I don’t think there’ll be a big “boom” of players upon launch. However the beta testers will probably continue to play. I know I most likely will. The way the “veterans” can aid to keeping players in the game is by being helpful in game. Along wiht creating various communities to cover the different interests of play-styles for the people that does play the game.

There’s no point in worrying about player base. Expect it to be low to begin with, and then take it for what it is as the game progresses with time.

Dawntide will have the playerbase required for a MMORPG to survive if it’s good.
Good means:
- Polished game client, with little bugs, and all the basic features.
- Good User Interface (macros, customizable UI, etc…) designed so that the player fights against the monsters in game, and not against a badly designed UI.
- Performance. That means no lag, but also no utterly slow graphics requiring a NASA mainframe to run decently.
- Good graphics, animations and sound, which all smoothly integrate into the gameplay.
- Dynamic and smooth gameplay. Combat “hand/screen/eye” coordination is VERY important. It is one of the things WoW got right. Combat needs to be fast and involving, and with immediate response to the player’s actions.
- Huge world with a ton of content. I know this is a sandbox, but from the previous beta, I know it also has quests. Have lore, have stories players can follow, and as a sandbox, most important, provide the player the tools to create his own stories.
- Useful crafting that doesn’t require to give up your real life to grind up.
- Basic functions like mail system, player run vendors or auction house, all this with a easy to use and powerful user interface.
- No “forced” PvP if the player doesn’t want it. Yeah, I know what some will say… but having a “PvE” server would greatly increase the population of this game, which means being able to “pay the bills” and add both PvE and PvP content. Or make sure that mindless ganking is VERY severely punished so that it’s kept to a minimum. But if no strict limits are set for PvP, this game will end in a gankfest just like DFO and MO, and will fail just like those two games. UO added “Trammel” for a reason… to SAVE the game that was hemorrhaging players notably to EQ, because PvE players and crafter were sick of being ganked and left for games which offered an environment more appropriate to their play style.

That’s only out of my mind right now, there are way more points of course in a game as complex as a MMORPG.

With regards to the comments on a tutorial, this is something that I have been well aware of for a long time. I have created many guides and information posts in the past to assist players joining the beta, but realise this is not ideal for a live game as many people simple dont want to read through hundreds of pages of text to filter out a few items of useful information.

I would like to create a video tutorial of the basics controls and function that will be available on the website, but until the game is closer to release this is not going to get done. I have lots of in game footage already recorded, and I know members of the team have too so with a bit of editing work this should easily be achievable.

With a long torrent download a video seems the best way to get players started. From there players can be directed to the forums for more specific research if they wish.

The game needs a ingame tutorial, most players are to stupid to go find a vid, or post on forums :)

I agree with Wiese, although Minecraft did really well with nothing but a Wiki!

AFAIK the in game help system will be brought up to date and extended, a comprehnsive player wiki will be available on the website and as well as the videotorial I plan to update the new player guide. Having any form of “walk-through” in game would be against the grain of sandbox gaming from my perspective. I would like to see some basic quests in game that help players explore the starter areas and familiarise themselves with the UI and beyond that I would “personally” let players work it out for themselves.

If players choose to ignore the resources provided on the website then that is fine, but presuming every player should follow an in game guide is a little patronising. I am not saying some players might like it, but I think too much hand holding is not a good thing. You cannot teach every person everything within even a 20minute tutorial as I have discovered while clipping videos. How would you walk a new player through building a bastion or a boat when they wont have the skills or materials to even attempt crafting the materials. You can teach players to train skills but you cant teach them to build a character correctly. With so much player diversity how do you teach every playstyle when there are reprocussions for every action. By encouraging players to research then players will use the tools provided, and having everything in game is not required. This is the main reason why I would like a video that can be played while the player is torrenting the game, maybe even imbedded in the patcher, that way everyone has the same starting point when they start the game. You can provide links from the patcher to the wiki and the FAQ meaning simply by running the game and tabbing to the patcher you have all the resources you need in one place.

No, Im not saying everything, just the basics pathy, how to craft basic things, fight, explain a few things etc…

And I have been thinking of writing one up on forums as well.
