Hello everyone! Political Systems- Parlimentary Republicanism- This is a quite simple system. A small select group rules with the people (other members of the group). It is a system vaguely similar to the U.S. government, although the lower masses usually have a slightly larger say. These groups are not commonly iron-handed, and usually work hard to help it’s members become wealthy and powerful. Over all this system works well. These groups (at least in the real world) are largely peaceful, although some might be aggresive. They are fairly unpredictable, so keep an eye out! Oligarchy/Dictatorship- This is the second most popular system in gaming, and entails the rule of 1 single person or a small body of persons without the consent of the masses. This system is cruel, and it’s rulers iron-handed. They will commonly set very strict Laws, however they will, in time, lose power as people become bored or annoyed with the ruler(s) for not helping them or giving them enough bonuses. However, while these groups ARE in place they are ALMOST ALWAYS aggresive! Watch out! Side note- These group’s are mostly socialistic (see below). Vigilante Democracy/Democratic Republic- These groups are the far left end of the political spectrum in games. These groups have no real ‘ruling’ party, and are ruled by the people. In these groups EVERYONE has a vote on what occurs. It is for this reason that these groups, like a Dictatorship, can easily become weak and collapse, as the constant need to have EVERYONE vote can lead to decisions taking too long to be made- this causing arguments to break out. These groups are commonly socialist. These groups aggresiveness varies widely. In early formation they can be very peaceful and friendly, near their end, however, they can be exceptionally violent. Capitalism- This system is one of the most popular economic system in gaming. Capitalism entails the group members having ownership of most if not all of their wealth and possessions. Because of this, a capitalist group usually becomes quite powerful as it entices it’s members to work harder, and in turn to make more money. An aggresiveness level can also not be given here, as this is an economic system and is applied to a group it can not be given an aggresiveness level (See groups above). Economic Systems Socialism- Many groups find that socialism is applied well to a game world. These groups will commonly have extremely high taxes/tariffs along with forcing group members to give all gear/items owned to the guild. However, these groups then pass out the items gathered evenly and fairly. HOWEVER these groups are quite commonly corrupted, and the leading group will keep more than their share of the rewards. If they are not corrupt, they can work quite well. These groups usually go under another group title (See the groups above) and as such an aggresiveness level cannot be given. War- 1. Remember, an empire too big will fall!- If you are going up against a massive, and I mean MASSIVE kingdom, fiefdom, or full blown empire, remember that they can’t take EVERYONE at once! If you are taking a on a great power, gather allies for the beat down! But remember, once the kingdom is divided, your allies might stab you in the back, or you them! 2. Nothing lasts forever!- No matter how powerful an enemy may appear, they will, no matter what sort of political system they have, collapse! There are many occaisions where all you have to do is wait the storm out! In these situations, don’t take unecessary risks! 3. Spies do good things!- One of the best ways to take down an enemy, be it big or small, is to infiltrate and have everyone turn on each other! If you do this, remember that the people you are fighting against are real humans, and will quite readily switch sides in exchange for better profits and items in-game! Use your enemies failings against them! 4. Economic bring giants down!- Remember, because the people you are fighting against are human, they will readily drop out of a kingdom if the profits aren’t good! If you want to bring an empire, fiefdom, or kingdom to it’s knees, take all of it’s key resources and make it more difficult for it to run! 5. Spread chaos!- The best way to, at least begin, to take an enemy down is to spread fear! Again, the people you are fighting against don’t REALLY die, and if you make life difficult for them they will become simply annoyed. Annoy them enough, and they quit! THIS ONLY WORKS IF THE GROUP CANNOT STOP YOU! This method is only useful if you are extremely weak or desperate, or if you are fighting against someone you KNOW won’t be able to stop you. 6. They’re real people!- REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER! The people you are fighting are REAL! Because they won’t die fully if you kill them, they WILL keep coming back no matter how many times you crush them! You can wipe out a country 1,000,000n times and the next day you might find MORE of them on your back step! Because they’re real people, they will also be willing to switch sides! If you want to take an enemy down from within, offer it’s members a better deal! 7. Guerilla warfare works!- Another good strategy to use in a life or death battle against an opponent greater than you is guerilla warfare! This form of warfare entails hit-and-run tactics, the attacking of small groups of the enemy, and so on. If you attempt this strategy on an enemy, remember what political system they run under, different systems will be able to stand it for different periods of time. Not only this, be SURE to be able to run this for a LONG time, as this strategy is designed to wear the enemy down, it will not wipe them out within a matter of days! Anarchy- 1. What does anarchy mean?- Anarchy means one thing, CHAOS! It’s every man for himself, kill or be killed! EVERYONE is killing EVERYONE! It sucks if you have to go through this! 2. How does anarchy occur?- Anarchy will be fairly common in the game’s beginning until powerful factions are established. Later on, anarchy will occur when a super-power or any kingdom of a sort completely collapses for one reason or another. What this entails is guards won’t due their duty, soldiers will become looters, and the average person will be looking for as much booty as possible! 3. What will happen in anarchy?- As said above, anarchy is MOSTLY caused by military disaster (although a faction’s weakness can also cause it) and because of this it will be quite common to see the guards and soldiers who’re supposed to be protecting you ATTACKING you! The best strategy to get through full-blown anarchy is to HIDE! Anarchy will end eventually when another faction takes power, or if the original faction finds it’s metaphorical nads and gets things in order! 4. (will put in later) As I said I give these notes based on my game-playing through many games, along with knowledge of real world systems. As this game progresses and I do I will add more details and updates for accuracy. Please enjoy! |

Seems like a strong set of matariel. I am intrigued by this game and am downloading the beta. I will certainly try to help as best I can. This will probably be my next MMO. |

Hold your horses (horses aren’t implemented yet btw), there’s no political system in Dawntide yet. I don’t get the purpose of this forum section and I hate politics, I guess it’s about diplomacy issues among factions…boring stuff… And you forgot extreme anarchy, without written laws, based only on common sense and mutual respect (or based on who wields the biggest weapon)…survival of the fittest.mostly…that’s what you’ll find here. Maybe that’s why we play these games after all, isn’t it? |

[quote=masterookoo]I’m putting this up for two reasons. Ignore the trolls, this part of the forum is for what you posted…. The people here are just being jerks as usually in any game. If they do not like it they can leave… I myself like the fact there will be poltics in this game as I can have my guild run a certain way and if people come near the town we have and break my laws we can pound them.. I love to pound people who break laws and get away with it..! |

Politics are part of any MMO simply because you are dealing with human beings and all (to a greater or lesser degree) want to protect what they have and grow. This can be done in many ways, some guilds are honourable that help others around them building a web of allies and respect (from both enemies and allies), others dictate, force and bully. The later is normally quicker to power but a much shorter life span where the first is slower to build but normally much more stable. There are many other ways to do it but those tend to be the primary routes normally called Good / Evil though that does seriosuly over simplify the two. Comments to the War section:- 2 – You could be waiting a long time for that to happen, in one game my community has played it took us 2 years to break an enemy that was 50% larger than ourselves with more resources and equipment. However if we had not constantly warred on them we would not have improved our skills to the point where we attacked them in so many places we divided their forces and won through attrition. You can’t sit on your hands and hope the enemy will go away you must fight bravely in the face of many defeats and LEARN. If the constant is that your enemy is larger than you, then you are forced to improve, to learn and to grow. Team work skills improve and over time you become stronger 1 on 1 than your enemy because you are more skilled at dealing with larger number of opponents. The main point here is don’t sit on your hands and wait get at them and fight, larger numbers does not ensure victory (it only helps) 3 – A totally disgusting practice and one not used by honourable and decent gaming communities. As you state in later comments remember these people are human beings this “point” suggests that causing internal strife between friends and guildmates is acceptable. There are many gaming communities and guilds that use infiltration as a standard tactic but there are also many that are honourable and decent players that do not resort to underhanded tactics. These are people you are playing against even if they use spies be the better person and raise above it. If your guild/community is a closenit group like ours (and I know a few communities that are the same) then offering their members in game items won’t bring them over. You failed in this comment to understand that most guilds function because they are friends and the correct term “guildmate” inplies a bond of friendship. Most gamers won’t sell out that for a few pixels. 4 – The idea is sound however if they are such a giant you face a few problems, 1 they will defend high priority resouces to the death, say they have 5 resources and you and said allies attack all they will defend the ones they can then promptly turn round and smash you when you try to defend the one’s you’ve taken. Added to that those giants tend to have the crafter/harvester types that lap up and enjoy gather, crafting and building. Guilds function on a large quantity of materials and the smart ones (which most are to get to the giant stage) have immense stocks to ensure that even should they lose all resources for a short or even medium length of time productivity doesn’t stop or slow. Added to that those giants could easily buy in mercenaries to assist in the protection of there land as is frequently the case. 5 – Unfortunately untrue, you can’t break the spirit of a group of players who don’t care about losses or game items. When the game is all about having fun as a group you the agressor hit a brick wall. Annoying a player does not force them to quit the game they just call in a few more guildmates to help deal with you. After spending 2 years as the underdog in another game and lossing many more battles than we won and yet still progressing to a position of dominance in that game i think that annoying us would be extremely hard as we thrive on challanges. Some of the most enjoyable battles haven’t been the one’s we’ve won but those that are hard fought or closely won/lost. It is the challenge that is enjoyable. 6 – This is closely related to the spying and i’d say good luck to this one, your success rate would be extremely low. Firstly if the enemy is successful then you are offering a more successful or equally success person something they already have with 1 small difference. In their current guild they know the situation, it is successful and they grow in your guild they do not know these things. The only people you’ll likely gain would be those who are generally not happy for whatever reason and would leave that guild anyway at some point. As most experienced guilds already know, not everyone suits a guild setup, some guilds are related others very strick and 1 player will not fit in with those or the varied guilds between. 7 – This is a pretty fair assessment of it, However this is extremely difficult to pull off, you must strike very quickly and be gone very quickly otherwise their members will gather and swarm you under, attack their city with a raid team, hitting a few buildings burn them kill a few then leave. Addition – 8 – Know your enemy & and train yourselves: Regarding Anarchy that one is simple, its the absense of a leading guild or group of guilds this normally occurs when a previously charasmatic leader falls or quits. At the start of any game it is not anarchy because the beta players/guilds form the starting factions/coalitions and quickly build up owned territory. It is only later when one of the founding and normally controlling guilds/factions falls or is annaliated that a brief period of anarchy kicks in. All in all not a bad post about politics – they are essentail in a game and any guild that doesn’t take part in them tends to get shunted to the side as the other guilds gather up into coalitions or under the leadership of another guild. Being involved in politics these days isn’t an option if you want to make it big in a MMO. ~Waylanda~ |

In EVE-Online I learned that the kind of people who end up in the leadership roles of big empires, somehow lose the plot completely, and do spectacularly stupid things :) I have seen 5000-member alliances (that had ruled for 2 or 3 years) collapse literally overnight. More often than not, those collapses had nothing to do with warfare. It was sometimes due to deep-cover moles, but mostly they fell due to someone’s over-inflated ego. Sad really… In PvP-focused games, the dominant political system is a military dictatorship, because that is the most effective way to govern when you are in a perpetual state of war. Guilds are first-and-foremost armies, because combat is the dominant feature of life in a PvP game. |

Not to dispute in any way what you have said , but PvP does not seem to be the main point and or attraction for this game, the world building system is different from any other game on the market past or present though similar to UO , it differs in that this game demands for players to work together if they wish to truly accomplish anything worth talking about…. What they have if they can pull it off , they being the DEV team. Is a fantasy world that could possibly run very much like the real world. As for a military dictatorship , the U.S military is not such a unit. Yes they have a chain of command as do all military units but it is the checks and balance at the upper end of that machine that keep it from being such. Because of the uniqueness of this game design I do not think war and mass pvp will take over the game , there is much to much to achieve and build for the world to run that way. I do however agree that there will be certain elements/factions that try and intend to do this, which will again make for an interesting and unique experience. |

Goonswarm does not count as a proper alliance.
Agreed that a Military Dictatorship is usually the effective way in PvP – but organized democracies have worked. end of the day, its more about the faction players, and how well they work together – or following like sheep, that decides if they are good. if there is a faction of 10000 morons, they’ll still beat 100 organized players. unless the 100 are very clever. ( NO, that wasn’t a spartan reference. Don’t, No Really. Don’t) |
