Not sure if its a suggestion I’ve put forward before. For me personally, and for a lot of previous UO players, there was a great importance with the text being shown above the character you played, rather than in a chatbox. I’m not saying the chatbox should be removed, as its a good “journal” feature if you missed something said. But if the game could in one or another way make it so the use of one command puts the text you input afterwards above the characters head (of course a feature that should be able to disable), and only seen by people that’s actually looking at you in game, it would mean a lot for the RP enviorment. I find that chatboxes are too, “Out of Character” as I like to put it. I reckon most RPers would agree.

This is a personal fealing, but is a pet hate of mine. I find it breaks immersion from a world when there are 50 chat bubbles covering the NPC I want to click and interact with. I “could” turn it off but then I dont know if a stranger is trying to sell something I want or get my attention.

Now I am not going to fight about it in any way as I understand many people like this design style. It works and its functional so it is all good, but my personal preferance is a fully functional and changeable ChatUI that I can move and size how I like.

The donwside is the chat UI will be required even if you have speach bubbles, as you will still want private chats in group/faction/PM so you just end up with 2 systems.

So put in a feature to turn it off like in runescape maybe?

i like the idea, but do think it should have a pretty decent falloff from distance. things “said” should only appear in chat bubbles right around you. also would need a readily accessable (maybe on the chat window itself) toggle for chat bubbles.

Personally I don’t like talk bubbles, as I find them to be spammy and an eyesore. However if I have an option to not use them and just use the chat box instead, then all good, the more options the better :)

It doesn’t have to be a complete new system. Merely an addition to whats there, as I said, the chatbox is very handy, just not very in character according to me. Just as any other commands, having a command for the text to be shown in a bubble above the characters head shouldn’t be that complex? An idea would be to chose whether you want it toggled on or of, if you chose to toggle it on, an extra chat tab appear in the chatbox, and by typing in this, you get bubbles above the head. I’m not asking for a whole new system, neither do I think its a possible solution. But the choice of having bubbles or not should be there.

And yes Elindor, that’s my idea. In UO you practically couldn’t hear people that were like 12 tiles away from you.

I absolute hate floating chat. Sorry but I do :) One of DT’s strong points is a very nice bit of realism, bubbles would diminish that.

If ever, please make it unnecessary and optional.

That is basically all I wish =)

Actually, as a friend of mine pointed out. I don’t really want “bubbles”. Just as long as there’s an option to have the typed text appear above the speaking characters head it would have even greater value of RP.

i think a compromise would be the addition to make signs and posters.so a merchant can have a shop sign and you could post faction recruitment and other varoius messages in towns squares.you could even have players set up signs showing the direction to there village or city
