There will be a varying price structure allowing players to subscribe monthly or quarterly with a discount or even buy a lifetime subscription. There will also be no initial purchase price and a free trial period.

This was posted by the lead dev a while ago, and to my knowledge has not changed. There is no way a project like this, which has been running for many years, can open on a free to play basis. Investors need repaying, staff need wages and hardware and administration costs need to be covered.

It is hoped that by allowing players a trial period and not asking for a client fee people will pay an ongoing subscription or pay for a lifetime subscription. The costs quoted for a lifetime subscription is less than the cost of a year subscription to a AAA game and there is no initial box cost or expansion fees.

The cash-shop model would not work with this design of game so the only other options are either monthly sub or buy-to-play and Dawntide will offer both options.

All you said is right.

Just a note about when will it be open ?
Because for monthly cost MMO, if you dont open in the next few days/weeks, you will get huge (really huge) competition with other blockbuster MMO that come this year and you will drasticly miss your playerbase.

Hope you know it and made your best to open really soon…

Regardless of when the servers re-open there will always be competition, and the launch of the game is still a long way off. Even when the servers open again the game will still be in beta while more mechanics are implimented and more bugs get fixed. Wiz will give more details of scheduling over time I presume, but as far as I know there is no confirmed launch date at this time.

While there are many AAA games due for release in the coming months such as TERA and Guild Wars 2 these are unlikely to significantly impact on Dawntide. Sandbox games by nature have a longer lifespan than more themepark titles, and players perhaps spend less hours per week playing in sandbox games. I would also comment that many gamers play more than one title at the same time rather than hopping from one title to the next. I know personally I have run muliple subs in the past for many years, and only due to testing games on a more serious basis have I tended to focus on a single project. Even while testing Dawntide pretty exclusively I still find time for different styles of game from time to time.

Any game releasing has to deal with competitors in modern times, and providing a good product with reliable service at a competitive price is all a developer can do. In these tough times with a fickle customer base failing on any one part of the three can lead to long term failure, as we all know.

I agree that “internal issues” feels a bit spooky. Like someone took the servers and batch files and used them as fire wood.

@Jah92

It’s important to know that this really won’t be like Skyrim (and you may have meant that in a more metaphorical sense), but from what I’ve read it’s more of a stand-alone Sandbox MMO like Wurm or UO (frequently cited on the site).

But dang, “internal issues” is pretty vague. Good luck, team!

GMPathy: “While there are many AAA games due for release in the coming months such as TERA and Guild Wars 2 these are unlikely to significantly impact on Dawntide.”

I agree for Tera, it’s just another of those boring Asiatic grinders… but GW2 seems to be a mix of Sandbox and Theme Park features which may come in direct competition against games like Dawntide, and GW2 is done by a bit developer with a lot of money.

Now I’m way too old and experienced in MMOs to blindly buy the hype built around GW2… all still depends on how they will keep their promises, something any veteran MMO fan knows is not granted. So many games promised to be the next “big thing” and failed miserably. On the paper, GW2 looks awesome… but ONLY on the paper.

@eidos
Too open before the game is ready would kill it before it started. If people are going to pay for it, it needs to be much more complete.

@wildcopper
I agree, Tera was hyped a lot by other players on other MMOs I play so I spent the weekend watching streams of gameplay both from closed Beta in NA/EU and end game in Korea. Both consisted of repeatedly running the same instance over and over, with the rare death match. Also with thier crafted items not coming anywhere near instance drop gear it is a completely different game than Dawntide.

My point is, since its going to be a paid to play MMO, if they dont launch it before other paid for play MMO of this year (wich are blockbuster), ppl wont paid for two MMO at same time (at least most of the ppl i play with).

So these last weeks would have been the best for them.

Of course if the game is not ready to be played, that a good option but then they should remove the “Open Beta” announcement and just made a new about “still in developpment” instead of this horrible “internal issue” one.

That said, i wish them the best and hope they will get a just reward for their work, they deserve it.

Eidos Dawntide has been in open beta for the last 2 phases, and is more of a developement beta than what most normal people encounter when they play a game in open beta. In more recent times an open beta has been a marketing tool as well as a method to stress test servers rather than do any actual bug reporting or fixing.

When Dawntide launched in open beta there were fall through cells, invisible walls, bugged mobs, broken crafting recipes and only very partial functionality of most game mechanics. With the help, dedication and patience of the playerbase the developers have been able to deal with many of the most critical issues and develope the crafting and settling systems to an almost functional level. The final phase of the beta will see more work on the combat systems, faction tools and the addition of more skills.

WAI do not have a big enough team to test everything internally on a closed server, so up until now there has been one test server that is used by the players and the dev’s alike. Players are asked to file bug reports as and when they find issues, as its well known there are plenty still unresolved and each new update usually brings more.

To expect to find a “standard” beta level game from Dawntide is unrealistic, unless you compare it to some other indie games such as Mortal Online. There are still many aspects of the game incoplete and server rollbacks are to be expected. Critical issues may still occur that cause things to change between now and launch, and as some of the older testers will tell you things do change for better and worse in Dawntide as things get implimented.

The term beta in modern times is not what it was a decade ago, and beta meant that people were still looking for broken mechanics and exploits so they can be fixed before release. This is the case in Dawntide, and will be for some time. There will be combat ballance issues, broken spells and indeed the occasional exploit that has not been dealt with.

You can play the game however even with these issues still in game, however there will be further wipes either at the game launch or during the final phase of beta. People not prepared for this kid of situation are often left feeling frustrated or disappointed but this is the realistic state of the project.

You can build a boat, a house or indeed a town and craft almost every recipe you may need to be self sufficient but the game is still not complete, or even close to it. With a combat overhaul there will be lots of issues to resolve and plenty more bugs to find.
