What is Dawntide?

Dawntide is a Massively Multuplayer Online Roll Playing Game (MMORPG) created by Working As Intended. There are many types of MMORPG, and Dawntide is classed as sandbox game due to its free form play mechanisms that allow players to use the tools of the game to create their own content within the game. Dawntide aims to offer a world of options and choices, allowing players to play against each other as well as the world. Players are free to be peaceful or aggressive, and to choose any path they wish with as few boundaries as possible. They can band together to build a small farming community or even a mighty empire with its’ own laws and allegiences.

Dawntide is a co-operative game where no one person is a master of everything, and learning to co-operate can be the greatest skill in the game. Players can manufacture all sorts of items, from brewing their own Troll Brew to building great galleons that can sail the world. There are unique creatures to hunt and remote islands to find and explore, rare resources to gather and sell. Traders, crafters, warriors and practitioners of magic will all find their place in the world. Everyone has their part to play whether a humble trader or a fear evoking king.

What skills do I pick at character creation?

This is entirely up to the player, and it is nothing more than a bonus in each of the skills you choose. You can train skills you don’t select at character creation so this is just a little helping hand.

Which race should I choose at character creation?

While the choice of race will not harm you in the long term, it does affect your attributes when you start out. Having the higher Strength and Constitution of the Vynn may help melee based characters, where as the higher Intelligence of the Cevanti may benefit users of magic.

How do start learning a new skill if I didn’t choose it at character creation?

All skills are trained with use, so to begin training you simply need to start using the skill. For gathering skills this will mean harvesting the most basic level of resource. Starting crafting professions will require using basic recipes, and combat skills can be be trained by using the associated gear.

How does training skills work?

As you use skills you will earn skill experience for each attempted action, which transfers into Skill Points over time. If you open your skills window (Hotkey T) you will find a list of all skills in game with you actual skill denoted in white. Below each skill name is a skill experience bar with a numerical value of how much experience you have stored in your current session. Each time you complete a task of sufficient difficulty you will accumulate skill experience in the experience bar which will transfer into Skill Points over time.

At some point gathering lower grade materials or crafting basic recipe will become trivial and stop rewarding skill experience. A player must either gather or craft higher grade materials or try new recipes. You can stop training a skill at any time by using the padlocks to freeze you Skills Points.

How do I train gathering skills?

    Herbalism

Herbs and flowers grow all over the world. They can be gathered simply by left clicking them. The Botany ability, found in the Ability Book (Hotkey P), can be used to identify a plant’s type. The most basic type of plants you can gather are Wolfberries, Wheat and Flax.

    Skinning

To train Skinning will require a skinning knife; if you didn’t choose skinning at character creation you may buy a one from another player or an NPC merchant. To skin creatures you must first kill them, so having some combat abilities is almost essential. The most basic creatures to learn skinning are Rabbits, Rats and Geese.

Different tree types require varying amounts of skill to harvest. If you have 0 skill you will need to find pear trees to start your training, on the starter island. The Botany ability, found in the Ability Book (Hotkey P), can be used to learn a tree’s type and age.

    Mining

Mining is slightly more difficult to train at first due to the lack of obvious spawn points. Metal ores are found in caves, stone is found on mountains, and both sand and clay are found on the beach. To find a place to mine you must first prospect a location. By using the Prospecting ability, found in the Ability Book (Hotkey P), in an an area that contains minable resources you will get a confirmation window denoting the material in the area and the amount allocated for you to mine. The closer to the center of the spawn the greater the amount of a material available to mine. Once you have accepted a prospecting point you can then use the Mining ability, also found in the ability book, to begin gathering what you have found.

How do I learn new recipes?

New recipes are added to your crafting interface (Hotkey O) when you have sufficient skill to attempt to use them. You may find that you can’t use them straight away, this is likely because the quality of the materials being used is too high. It is best to try new recipes using the most basic resources.

How do I learn spells?

In order to use sorcery, a player must learn spells. Spells are learned from scrolls, which can be purchased from merchants. There are five spell schools, or skills, and five spell circles. The higher the circle, the more difficult the spell is to cast, and the higher skill you will need to be able to reliably cast it. There is a different spell merchant for each circle of spells.

To scribe a scroll, simply right-click it with your mouse and it will go to your ability book (accessed by clicking the book icon in the bottom left section of your interface). The Spells tab of your ability book contains all the spells you have learned, and can be sorted by school by clicking the spell school tabs on the left side of the book. To cast a spell, click its icon in the book, move the icon to your hotkey bar, and drop it. You can now cast it by simply clicking it in your hotkey bar.

Where can I sell items that I have collected and made?

Each NPC town currently has a Crown Market representative; in the starting town it is trader Ergol. You can buy items that other players have sold or sell your wares. The Crown Market will accept most crafted items and some raw materials, however other players may pay more or less than the trader will. It is well worth trying to sell to other players before resorting to the Crown Market. When you first interact with trader Ergol you will see a list of everything for sale. At the bottom of the page is a tab to move to the selling window.

How do I access my inventory?

When a player starts the game you have a basic backpack and a basic bag, both are quality 1.0, and they are shown in the bottom right corner of the screen on your belt bar. You may only equip one backpack in the left most slot on the bar, increase the quality of the bag and you increase the capacity. There are also some empty, free slots with numbers inside. These numbers denote the required Strength attribute required to carry a bag in that slot. You can toggle all bags open/closed (Hotkey B) or manually open them, but be careful that you don’t remove them from your belt bar when trying to open them.

All items have a series of values, the Quality statistic is the basic measure for how good or bad an item or material is. By opening the character screen (Hotkey C) you will see that you have basic equipment based on your starting picks at character creation. If you chose no armor skills you will have basic clothing, however if you chose the Heavy Armour skill you will be wearing in basic copper splint armour. Similar with weapons skills and also tools for any selected crafting professions.

Do items get destroyed or get damaged?

All items have an attribute called condition. An item at condition 1.0 is in perfect working order. Items gradually decay from being used and will eventually be broken at condition 0. The proficency of an item will decrease as its condition drops. This means items need repairing or replacing on a regular basis.

All crafted items can be repaired via the repair tab of the crafting interface. Having skill in crafting the type of item being repaired and higher quality materials can both increase the sucessfulness of a repair.

If I die will I lose everything I have?

You will keep any starter items (including bags, armor and currency), however everything else will remain on your corpse.
